What platforms are in question? iOS, Android, or both?

If you want to do it on both platforms, you might like to use the Rich Pages functionality. Upon tap on the push, the app will be opened with the Rich Page on top of it (in the webview). Before sending a Rich Page, you need to manually create it in the Control Panel.

If Android only is in question, then you might want to use the banners ("android_banner" parameter of the API). You should simply specify a URL of your image, and it will be displayed in the Android Notification Bar below the actual message.
