We tried setting up a retention push targeting users who had not used the app in X number of days. However, the only option we have is users who had not LAUNCHED the app in X number of days. This is very different, and not really usable since someone may launch the app and keep it running, using it and putting it in the background a few times. Someone may have launched the app X days ago, used it yesterday, and get a push reminding them to come back to the app.

How are other folks working around this?

Hello,

Actually, as far as I know, the default Tag "Last Application Open" is used here. So, it is not the same as "Launched".

someone may launch the app and keep it running, using it and putting it in the background a few times

In this case, /applicationOpen request will be initiated on the next app open respectively, no matter if the application was in the background or not.

Regards, Ivan
